Key findings

The association Lunaries carries out a mapping of episodes of discrimination reported in Italy by the media. 1,125 episodes were mapped between 2021 and 2023. 180 were on grounds of religion: 37 in 2021, 42 in 2022 and 101 in 2023 (data is not disaggregated by religion). As for the type of discrimination, 747 cases consisted in verbal violence, 165 in physical violence, 22 of damage against property, 191 discriminations (including institutional discriminations). Besides reporting the data, the report also includes 10 articles of experts commenting the data and the mapped episodes.

Methodology (Qualitative/Quantitative and exact type used, questionnaires etc)

Episodes of discriminations are constantly mapped by Lunaria, in collaboration with the project Chronicles of Ordinary Racism (Cronache di ordinario razzismo), monitoring media, newspapers and also receiving direct reports via e-mail.

Sample details and representativeness

1,125 episodes were mapped during the period 2021-2023: 314 in 2021, 368 in 2022, 443 in 2023.
